INDIA REACHING TOWARDS ‘SMART’ WITH SMART METERS
WHAT IS A SMART METER?
The smart energy meter is an electronic device which keeps track of the energy consumption, voltage levels, current and power factors by a residence, business or electrically-powered device. Smart meters are reliable in terms that they are the most accurate source of information of energy consumption which reduces the odds of any error in the current billing systems to negligible.
WHY SMART METERS?
Now is the time to implement smart meters.
With the pandemic happening right now and the degrading financial performance in the power distribution companies, it is in the limelight that a significant amount of make over is required for the power sector, thus, involving smart meters to the process of solution.
Traditional meters require readings to be made in person, smart meters don’t. The reading can be observed remotely and by the consumer over the internet.
measure power consumption only for a household or business whereas a smart meter can track the usage in approximately 15-minutes to one hour intervals and transmit data utilities constantly. Smart meters also enable a two-way communication with the utility and home/business.
WHY SMART METERS IN INDIA
Smart meters in India can provide power companies the capability to improve the means of checking and determining bills. The national smart metering program has its sight to replace 250 million conventional meters with smart meters. Around Rs 65,000 crore is estimated to be needed to make a shift from traditional to smart meters supposedly along with a considerable reduction in the prices of current meters with rising volumes.
As of now, India has a smart meter penetration of barely 1% – around 3 million smart meters are operational, compared with ~270 million traditional meters. This is much lower than in mature markets such as the US (65-75%), France (60-70%), and China (40-55%). One of the main reasons for this is the financial anguish. As of July 2020, discoms had outstanding dues of Rs 1.28 trn to generation companies.
The switch to smart metering will present challenges. Discoms need to upgrade to better meter data management systems and technologies to sort out interoperability issues with legacy MBC systems – something that the end-to-end rental model would cover. Manufacturers too need to ensure compatibility with transmission and metering infrastructure. However, the benefits outweigh the costs. As the pandemic has shown, discoms can no longer afford to postpone the switch to smart meters if they are to charge up for the future.
HPL SMART METERS
HPL is a leading Private electrical equipment manufacturer in India. HPL manufactures a number of diverse electric equipment which includes metering solutions, LED lighting, wires & cables, switch gears which serves consumers at household and industrial levels.
HPL has a whole range of metering solutions equipped with advanced communication interfaces like LPRF (low power radio frequency), GSM/GPRS, IrDA, Modbus, Ethernet.
The strong developmental and research capabilities of the company have entitled to stay leveled up with technological advancements in the electronics industry. The company includes developments in the designing aspects as well, of all types of metering schemes, including the AMR and AMI, prepayment metering solutions, solar net metering solutions, smart meters with two way communication and a complete range DLMS compliant meters, amongst others, and technologies and solutions that allow for active monitoring of energy consumption for electric equipment.
The company includes meters: single phase, three phase and LTCT/HT energy meters, smart meters, panel meters, prepayment meters (whereby a monetary limit can be set on the electricity to be supplied to a particular consumer), net metering solutions and transformer metering solutions remote communication facilities. All its tariff meters are certified by the BIS as conforming to the Indian Standards Index.
So, let’s switch to Smart. Let’s switch to Smart metering.
