Electrical Accessories, the right hand of Electrical Appliances
Well as anyone with a little bit of knowledge can guess that the electrical industry is huge and accessories are a part of it. The electrical world now a day is on fire one way or another. We use electrical appliances from the moment we wake up to the very moment we fall asleep and even while we are taking a nap, our need for electrical appliances never stops and accessories make them work the way we know. An electrical accessory is a basic part used in wiring either for protection & adjustment or for the control of the electrical circuits or for a combination of these functions. These items are used in domestic and electrical wiring alike switches, holders, sockets, fuse, etc. Most of the common electrical accessories are made of bakelite, which is a good insulating material and is least affected by moisture and oil etc. Electrical industry has changed the face of India as a developing nation.
We all know how important electrical devices and appliances are, in this day and age; which is why, it is a good idea to know what they basically are, how they work and what are their true features and characteristics. Since we have already covered what they are above, let us move onto the next one.
The working of electrical accessories is quite simple as well. A large percentage of electrical accessories work by switching or changing the amount of current flowing through the device, hence the insulating material “bakelite” to make them. However, keep in mind that there might be other ways to achieve these using accessories based on other principles.
The third one might be the one with the most variety. The true features of electrical accessories are more than you and I can count on a dozen fingers on each hand. From an appliance as simple as a bulb to commercially used floodlights, from a table fan to the thrusters of a Boeing 737, everywhere you can use electricity, you will need an electrical accessory to go with it. They are not essential to make an appliance work but if you want to control its functionality in any way, or use it in a safe and hazard free manner, you are bound to use them in one form or another.
Electrical accessories include:
Switches
A Switch is used make or break a circuit. At the instant of breaking the switch, it should break the current so that there is no formation of an arc between the switchblades and contact terminals. There are four types of switches: Tumbler switch, Flush switch, Knife switch, and I.C. main switch.
Lighting accessories
It includes tube lights, bulbs, lamp holders, etc. A lamp holder is used to hold the lamp required for lighting purpose. Bayonet cap lamp holders, Switched Bayonet cap lamp holders, Screw lamp holders, Fluorescent lamp (Tube) holders are types of lamp holders.
Power sockets
The socket has an insulated base with moulded or socket base having 3- terminal sleeves. The two thin terminal sleeves are meant for making a connection to the cable with the third terminal sleeve thicker in cross-section is used for earth connection. The cover is again moulded and has corresponding 3 holes. These are made for 5 amps and 15 amps load. A socket is used to provide the main supply to a portable appliance, such as table fan, table lamp, electric iron, radio, T.V., etc. And the list goes on.
